Free Fallin’: Bucket List Item #1, Complete

As 2011 came to a close, we shared our End-of-the-World Bucket List of 26 items with you. Today we free fall into the list with skydiving in Interlaken, Switzerland. Prepare yourselves for quite the adventure…and don’t forget your parachute!

This bucket list item only requires 24 hours (not including the trans-Atlantic flight), so we will zip from Miami right over to Bern, which has the closest major airport to Interlaken. 45 more minutes in the car & we have arrived! Surrounded by nothing but mountains & lakes, Interlaken deserves a moment for us to appreciate our surroundings before jumping (no pun intended) right into crazy, adventure sports.

This Bernese Oberland town lends itself to some of the most extreme outdoor activities in the world. Not only could we jump out of a plane, but we could also go Canyoning, which is basically white water rafting without a raft. Exhilarated yet? No? Okay. Jumping out of a plane it is! After spending some time with our instructors & preparing for the jump, our guides will take us up up & away. Looking down on the Swiss Alps would be more impressive if our hearts weren’t pounding out of our chests. 3…2…1…jump! Out of the plane & into the cool, Swiss air, we are skydiving down towards one of the most breathtaking places one could skydive. It’s just us & the snowcapped mountains & a pattern of lakes. Pull the chute, smooth landing, deep breaths.

Back safely on the ground, we are on to the hotel to slow down our adrenaline, drink some hot cocoa, snack on some Toblerone & treat ourselves to the spa. The Victoria-Jungfrau Grand Hotel sits at the base of the Jungfrau (now the hotel name makes sense), offering a picturesque view of Interlaken (not as picturesque as thousands of miles in the air). This Leading Hotel of the World, which has been around since 1865 (yes, it’s old), features 65 suites, among other room types, which are the perfect home away from home.

Victoria-Jungfrau also boasts an ESPA – count us in! And, since we got the hook up, this hotel gives us (& our clients) an upgrade upon check-in, daily complimentary breakfast for 2, one Aperitif at the Victoria Bar, early check in & late check out. Everyone knows nothing’s better after skydiving than an Aperitif (no one knows that).

While in Interlaken, we obviously are going to chow down on some fondue. Can you blame us? Fondue restaurants are abundant…we might even go to two (we are that crazy). After our adventurous day & cheesy dip, we are off to our next bucket list item in the morning. Sweet dreams!
